Part 5: The Busy Busy OR Sedentary Parent — Healing Your Own Nervous System in Nature

Hi Friends, When I first sat down to write this series, my heart was focused entirely on our children — on the unfairness of the couch-potato lifestyle and the critical need to return young, developing minds to the healthy dirt, the blessing of sunshine, and the wild earth. But as I peeled back the layers of this modern crisis, a deeper truth stared back at me.

We cannot give our Children a Gift we do not have Ourselves.
We can Explore it though, if we have the Courage to Try something New.

The reality is that an entire generation of Modern Parents were raised inside the exact same suburban, screen-centric bubble that is now confining their kids. If you find the outdoors exhausting, dirty, or frankly a bit boring, it is not your fault. You were programmed by concrete and glass just as your children are being programmed today.

Excessive Time Indoors with so much TV Viewing and Time spent on Tech Devices is a highly Synthetic Lifestyle. No wonder we're Stressed. Did you know that those things actually Set our System Up for Stress when we spend so much time with them, because they're actually Foreign to the way we were Created and what we were essentially Designed to Respond to (Best) NATURE........this Racy Pacy World has made us Estranged to the Very Environment that's Conducive to Health and Vitality and Keeps us Balanced.
And this same wonderful, beautiful Nature is the Ideal Antidote to Stressful Living. When given a Chance, it can Help to Restore Our Equilibrium OR Find it for the First Time.

So this final piece is my Invitation to You. It is time to stop standing on the sidelines as a stressed-out supervisor, constantly governing and shouting, "Be careful!" It is time to step into the wild for your own sake. When you Heal your own Relationship with the Earth, your Children will naturally follow you into the Light.

With warmth and hope, from Janet

Look at the parent standing on the edge of the modern plastic playground, scrolling mindlessly on their Smartphone while their Child plays. It is easy to judge this scene, but we are missing a deeper truth: that Parent was likely raised in the exact same sterile, Indoor World they are now reinforcing for their children. An entire generation of adults has grown up cut off from the Physical Earth, experiencing the same Chronic Stress, Poor Sleep, and Digital Fatigue that plagues their Kids. We cannot pass down a Love for Nature if we have never felt its Healing Power Ourselves.

To break this Cycle, Parents must stop viewing Nature as a playground exclusively for kids and start viewing it as a Sanctuary for their Own Wellness. The exact same elements that heal a developing brain—fresh air, natural light, and the slow rhythms of the earth—are the ultimate antidote to adult burnout and Anxiety. When you step into a wild space, your nervous system begins to drop its defences. Your cortisol levels plunge, your mind clears, and the exhausting digital noise fades away. Nature is not a chore you endure for your Children; it is a medicine you take together.

The wonder happens when you step out of the role of the "governing" parent. Modern parenting demands constant monitoring, endless rules, and frantic scheduling. But when you step into a paddock, a forest, or onto a beach, Nature takes over the role of the Teacher. You no longer have to direct the play or manage the entertainment. Your only task is to stop policing and Start Experiencing.

Take off your shoes and feel the grass or sand beneath your own feet. Sit against a tree and look up at the canopy. Splash in the creek alongside your child without worrying about the wet laundry. When a Child sees their Parent genuinely relaxed, laughing, and captivated by a bird, a strange rock, or a sunset, something profound shifts. You are no longer just passing time; you are building a Shared Family Culture of Wonder, Presence, and Resilience that will carry you both through an unpredictable world.

Nature brings some Simplicity into Our Lives.
