Insomnia In Children: Causes, Treatment, And Natural Remedies

By Sagari Gongala (BSc)

Insomnia complaints in children are usually associated with lack of restorative sleep (deep sleep and REM sleep). A child is said to have insomnia if they (1):

  • Have difficulty falling asleep at night
  • Have trouble staying asleep at night
  • Wakes up very early, at around three in the morning and have difficulty going back to sleep.

This can lead to a significant impairment in the child’s body functions during the day. Insomnia can be long-term, wherein the child has trouble sleeping for at least three weeks or more, or short-term, lasting for just a few days. MomJunction will tell you everything you need to know about insomnia, what causes it, and how to help your child deal with it.…

That lifestyle is what drew us here. We wanted to provide a different type of upbringing for our three young girls: one that focused on adventurous time spent in nature. So for the past two years we’ve been committed to finding fun and imaginative ways to spend as much time as possible out in nature. Over time we’ve grown from a family that considered a trip to a local park an adventure, to one that hikes and camps, fishes and skis.

We’ve grown closer as a family as we’ve grown to embrace our new lifestyle. And our difficult daughter? Well, we still have our moments, but almost never outside.

At first we didn’t know exactly why we wanted to raise outdoor loving kids – it just instinctively seemed like a good idea. If we did have a specific motivation, it was the hope that by starting them early our girls would grow up physically strong and healthy, and with a lifelong love for outdoor activity. Over time we’ve come to learn that the emotional benefits of more time in nature probably outweigh the physical ones.

BENEFITS OF SPENDING MORE TIME IN NATURE AS A FAMILY

GREEN SPACE IS A TERM USED FOR GARDENS, PARKS AND NATURE SETTINGS THAT ARE PLANNED OR INTRODUCED IN CITY AND SUBURBAN AREAS FOR THE BENEFIT OF RESIDENTS, WORKERS AND VISITORS AND ENHANCING DEVELOPMENTS. THEY PROVE TO BE BENEFICIAL FOR HEALTH, MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY. THE THERAPUETIC BENEFITS CAN EVEN BE EXPERIENCED PHYSICALLY AS WELL. EVEN THE YOUTH BENEFIT BEHAVORALLY WHEN THERE IS GREEN SPACE IN THEIR AREA. LAND DEVELOPERS ARE NOW CONSIDERING MORE GREEN SPACE IN NEW DEVELOPMENT AREAS. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED YEARS AGO AND IS NOW BEING CORRECTED. GARDENS AND NATURE IS SOMETHING THAT IS NECESSARY IN OUR LIVES AND WE CAN ALL BENEFIT BY SPENDING SOME TIME OUTDOORS.

Gardening For Health: A Regular Dose Of Gardening

By Richard Thompson – Royal College Of Physicians UK

There is anxiety that the NHS cannot cope now and in the future with the health needs of an increasing and ageing population. It is also realised that pharmaceutical drugs are increasingly expensive and are not always as effective as they appear in the results of early, enthusiastically reported, clinical trials. Drugs are also prescribed at the cost of side effects, which are a leading cause of admissions to hospitals, particularly for the elderly, who are poorly represented in trials.…

For some, camping in nature is a fun hobby. It’s just a way to spend time with loved ones, cook over an open flame, and get a bit of fresh air. For others, it’s more meaningful. It allows them to disconnect from the modern world, explore the unknown, or reconnect with nature. Regardless, everyone who participates gets some kind of benefit, including some they may not expect.

Camping Has the Power to Reset Our Internal Clocks

For diehard campers, no one needs to tell them how beneficial sleeping underneath the stars can be. The combination of peaceful tranquility, fresh air and connection with nature is enough to cure the effects of the 9-5. New research is backing up this intuition, suggesting that taking a time out from our busy, technology-soaked lives can help reset our internal clocks so we can literally rest more easily.

Researchers from the University of Colorado in Boulder set out on a six day camping trip in the Rocky Mountains, sans smartphones and any other illuminating tools. For the duration of the trip, the campers only utilized daylight and the glow of their campfire. The result was the group going to sleep an average of two and a half hours earlier than they would at home and getting ten hours of sleep each night.…

YES, HOURS OF TV AND INTERNET SURFING AND LOTS OF MEDIA OVER OUR "SMART PHONES" ARE PROVEN TO WEAKEN OUR IMMUNE RESPONSE TO VIRUSES, INFLUENZA AND PANDEMICS. COMPUTER GAMES ARE IN THE MIX. I COVER NUTRITION ALERTS IN A DIFFERENT POST - A LINK IS PROVIDED AT THE END OF THIS PAGE. WALKING, EXERCISE AND SLEEP ALSO BENEFIT OUR BRAIN. I FOUND THESE EXCELLENT ARTICLES ON THESE TOPICS AND WILL PLACE EXCERPTS HERE. THIS CUTS DOWN SOME OF MY WRITTEN WORK BECAUSE I RUN SEVERAL WEBSITES.

How Binge-Watching TV Can Wreck Our Immune Systems - 2018

It turns out there are some surprising daily habits, such as overdosing on our favourite TV Series, that can wreak havoc on the body’s ability to fight off Colds and Influenza.

Nicole Jennings, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics – a leading provider of colds and flu medication – says the relatively new phenomenon of being able to watch an entire TV series all at once, as opposed to waiting a week, has sparked several studies that attempt to understand how binge-watching is impacting our health.…

If you didn't have to worry about work, social commitments or kids, what would be your ideal time to go to sleep?

You probably know that sleep is important — you can tell that just by how yuck you feel when you don't get enough of it.

But is there more to sleep than just how much you get? Is there a difference between getting the much-hyped eight hours between 11pm and 7am, and 9pm and 5am?

The short answer to the "is there an ideal time for going to sleep" is "at night-time". But that's too short for an article, and there is a little more to it than that, so we asked some sleep experts for a deeper answer.

Your Perfect Bedtime Is In Your Genes
Moira Junge is a health psychologist with the Sleep Health Foundation, an advocacy group that campaigns for all things relating to sleep, and she says the idea that there's one true time to rule them all for going to sleep is a myth.…
